Dell Studio Hybrid

Dell has a new low power Dell Studio Hybrid Desktop that “Uses about 70% less power than a typical desktop, and meets Energy Star® 4.0 standards with an 87% efficient power supply. ” Priced from $499 or $699 with a 19in LCD monitor. They do not list how much power it uses though.

To comply with the new Energy Star 4.0 standard, a desktop PC must use under 50W in idle mode and 4W when asleep.

PC Magazine has a review that states: “The system uses only 1 watt of power when off or in hibernate mode, a frugal 26W while sitting idle, and 44W when the system is fully taxed, as on the CineBench R10 test. This is phenomenal power usage and is only a couple more watts more all around than the Mac mini.”

Here is a list of power use for some common PCs. My Core 2 Duo 2.13Ghz E6400 PC with 4GB RAM, 500GB and 150GB hard drive, DVD Writer uses about 100 watts of power.

This new machine does use very little power, but utilizes some notebook components that lead to slower performance.
