Air Duct Cleaning and Vent Cleaning
Posted by easy eco blog

I keep hearing Air Duct and Vent Cleaning commercials on the radio. Clearly it is a big business. They brush and vacuum up each air duct and into each return where possible. It is supposed to help remove dust, mold, etc especially helpful for people with allergies.
American Lung Association states:
“Duct cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems, nor is scientific evidence currently available to conclusively demonstrate that particle (e.g., dust) levels in homes increase because of dirty air ducts. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency does not recommend that air ducts be cleaned routinely, but only as needed.”
They also have tips for improving Air Quality.

I realize that there are companies that make claims such as the ones listed above; however this is not the only reason to have your air ducts cleaned. A lot of residential and commercial buildings have their coils, ducts, and etc. cleaned routinely in order to protect the investment they have in their heating/cooling systems and to save on energy consumption and cost. The actual data that the referenced article was derived from is http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/airduct.html and they do mention that there are circumstances where duct cleaning might be beneficial from a health standpoint, as you related above.

I have been in the air duct cleaning business for 20 years and have seen lots of dirty furnace and air duct systems. We typically recommend cleaning about every 2 years here in Minnesota. This improves air quality and saves money on utility bills. Just make sure you hire a reputable company and make sure they do a good job by asking them to see what they get out of the furnace and air ducts as they clean them.

Duct Cleaning can make a difference. I have had customers from all over the Denver tell me they are breathing easier after having their ducts cleaned. So I disagree with the above statement. Duct cleaning can remove dust, allergiens, and mold. If duct cleaning caused more dust they why are they still in business? Clean ducts may not lead you to longer life but it will help you to breath easier, esp when your ducts are dirty because a furnace pumps in and out what is inside your ducts. In other word you are breathing in what is inside your ducts. Ductman Doug
