Here in the UK the Government has plans for every home to have a Smart Meter by the end of 2020. It will enable suppliers to remotely record customers’ gas and electricity use, doing away with meter readings, while householders will be able to see how much energy they are consuming.

I understand that many in the US are wary of this, pointing out that energy companies will raise their prices to compensate for installing meters and lower energy use.

In the UK, too, not everyone is happy with the idea, seeing it as one more step on the road to a ’surveillance state’.

On the positive side, homeowners who have had SolarUK solar thermal systems installed have reported electricity savings too through getting electricity monitors, which helps make them realise that they sometimes use energy unnecessarily. Other measures could be as simple as changing lightbulbs to energy saving ones.
