We’ve covered the economics of a vegetable garden in the past.  While they are quite favorable, so people do not have the space or green thumb to start a full blown garden. Granted these items do cost money.

Victory Gardens

Victory Gardens are making a comeback.  They were gardens planted in your yard to help cope with food shortages during World Wars. Today people are trying to lower their carbon footprint, become independent, eat healthy foods, and keep it local. Sales of seeds have been growing lately. This site has some help to get you started.
