Siemens ECO DECT green cordless phones – Panasonic ECO DECT cordless phones

Siemens ECO DECT green cordless phones

Did you know that (DECT) 1.9Ghz digital cordless phones emit the same type of pulsed microwave radiation (about 1.8 GHz) as ordinary (GSM) cell phones. Emissions can be about 6 V/m within a metre of the base unit, for as long as it is plugged in. Companies push these phones because they do not interfere with Wifi networks. Many base stations emit their radiation even when the phone is not in use! Microwaves are continuously emitted 24 hours a day as long as they are plugged in. Not good. More Warnings. – “DECT cordless phones work at a fixed power. Mobiles turn their power down to the lowest level possible, so when you are near a base station this can be much lower than a DECT cordless. DECT pulses are far more aggressive than for mobiles.”

3rd Generation DECT

Only the 3rd generation DECT models will not emit radiation continuously. These new models also adjust their power output depending on how far away the base station is from the handset. We could not find US cordless phone models that mention this issue. This is a big deal in Europe.

This wireless technology is now the main one being used on most cordless phones in the US. 5.8Ghz cordless phones have faded away. There are issues with these DECT cordless phones constantly transmitting even when not in use. It is especially concerning if you put a cordless handset next to your bed. Always err on the cautious side.

Siemens ECO DECT

Siemens eco dect line is a popular line of cordless phones. The Siemens Gigaset DECT cordless phone was the first Eco DECT Mode Plus cordless phone to address the issues. The following Siemens DECT Cordless phones are the latest models.

What to look for in a cordless phone

  • Reduce the transmitting power of the Siemens Gigaset ECO Mode Plus Phone’s base station by 80% simply by selecting the ECO DECT Mode.
  • Energy saving ECO Mode Plus for 100% reduction of transmitting power when the handset is idle or charging.
  • “The international limits for radio wave transmission ensure that there are no risks. Our products fall well below these recommended limits. Even though there is still no scientific evidence that radio waves emitted by DECT phones are harmful, SHC’s approach is to equip all its Gigaset phones with functions that enable the automatic or manual reduction of transmitting power.”
  • The energy-saving power supply of the Gigaset ECO Mode Plus Phone’s uses up to 60% less energy.

See how much radiation is coming from a DECT cordless phone.

Siemens now has a family of ECO Mode Plus DECT cordless phones, so be sure to check these out when shopping for a new cordless phone.  While they still radiate while being use, these eco dect phones are far better than plain DECT cordless phones. Some are available inside the US.

5.8Ghz cordless phones

If you have an old DECT phone, you may want to upgrade. We use 5.8Ghz phones to avoid this issue. Amazon still sells a bunch of 5.8Ghz cordless phones.

Panasonic DECT Cordless Phones

Some Panasonic DECT Cordless phones feature an Intelligent Eco Mode that automatically lowers the power consumption when you are using the handset close to the base unit or while the phone is not in use.  This is better at reducing radiation, but not great. We recently tested one that has a ECO indicator on the handset. This light remained on while handsets sat in their cradle.

Other cordless phone manufacturers do not even mention these radiation issues.  When in doubt, use a corded telephone.

DECT Baby Monitors Radiation Alert

DECT technology is now the main one being used on most cordless phones and is now being used for Baby Monitors. It is especially concerning because a baby monitor is almost constantly transmitting. Another concern is that you place the baby monitors next to your bed and your baby’s crib. This issue is getting press in the UK, not in the United States.

How much constantly emitted radiation is safe?  Let the experts debate it, we do not even want to worry about it.

We suggest avoid DECT baby monitors and stick to the old style 900Mhz baby monitors. Turn the baby monitor OFF when you absolutely do not need it.  Station the monitors at least 10 feet from both beds.

Think twice about deploying your own WiFi network, which will add to the radiation. At least turn it off when you are sleeping.  Also many baby monitors have security holes that allow anyone to listen in on you.

Save money by Ditching your Landline Phone

Have a cell phone? Thought so…

Xtreme Technologies Bluetooth Gateway
helps you dump your landline phone line and use your cellular phone at home. It connect your cell phone to a standard phone line jack using Bluetooth. Save money and consolidate bills using this beast.  Position your cell phone and this box in the optimal area for cell phone reception in your home and you are set. Beware of the cell phone radiation warnings that have been posted.

Vtech makes a DECT cordless phone with the Bluetooth built in but no where does it state that it is a eco friendly green DECT phone like the Siemens SL785, that does not radiate constantly.  Yes the same worries about radiation from a cordless phone are valid when you cut your cord.

Do you have any tips to reduce your exposure to radiation?

It is a nice concept to have phones that reduce their transmission power when they are idle. It saves power as well as minimizes unwanted radiation. But as mentioned it is much better to use a phone with cords wherever possible to eliminate the radiation problem. We run a web directory where we feature many similar innovations.

DECT phones are great, but I did not know about the
base sending so much juice through our brains!

A lot of us have cordless bases by our beds.

    Thanks for the insight!

    HI

thanks for showing my clip, and for showing people that fact about these dect phone.
    Few comments:
    1. Not all “eco dect” phones actually have a mode in which their base station does not emit RF EMR all the time.
    2. When you buy an “eco dect” phone you have to configure it to work in “ECO DECT” and “ECO DECT PLUS” modes inorder for it’s base station not to emit RF EMR all the time.
    3. When you configure and ECO DECT phone to work with an edditional extension this will cancel the ECO DECT Modes and it’s base station will emit RF EMR all the time.

    All the best

I hate when they say this because it it totally false “Even though there is still no scientific evidence that radio waves emitted by DECT phones are harmful”
Class 2b carcinogen last I heard.

  8. Deb Says:

I’d like to get a ECO DECT PLUS phone in the US. Siemens told me they don’t make the PLUS models in the US.
I don’t need anything expensive or complicated.
Is the A5801P model a eco dect plus phone? I can get that one on Amazon.

It seems like there may be some ECO Dect Plus versions out there, but seems very hard to tell which ones they are.

I know there are some Australian models on ebay, but I don’t want conversion problems plus expensive shipping.

    Thanks,
    Deb

  9. easy eco blog Says:

The A5801P is not sold in the USA, I wouldn’t try to use a foreign telephone here and probably does not work. The Siemens Gigaset SL785 DECT cordless phone seems like the best bet.

We have the Panasonic DECT Cordless phones with Intelligent Eco Mode and would love to know the readings you got if you metered them. Have actually put corded phones back in service to reduce EMF issues, but still have the cordless set up for outside use, etc.

Thanks for you great info and work on these issues.
